Showered, dressed and sat on the couch with steaming cups of hot chocolate, Vlad found it hard to form any words. They were supposed to talk, but Vlad would have much rather snuggled close to Geo, turned on the TV, and forgotten all about everything that worried him Forget about explanations and excuses and all the reasons why this couldn’t last. What was the point of talking about it anyway? No amount of conversation was going to fix the situation they found themselves in.
“So? What freaked you out in the shower?”
Vlad winced at Geo’s question, wondering why he was such an open book to him now. Not before, not when it mattered, not when it could have made a difference.
“I don’t know, really. It was so fucking hot one minute, and then I was sinking into a black hole of nothing a moment later.”
Geo frowned, turning the cup around, his eyes following the movement. “If I did something that made you shut down like that, I wish you’d tell me.”
Vlad inhaled and held his breath in before releasing it. He wondered if his honesty would freak Geo out. He’d never been big on lies or keeping things from people he cared about. Or used to care about. “I tried to kiss you and you kept stopping me. I imagine you wanted to tease me, but it just…” He placed his cup on the coffee table and ran his hands through his hair. “It just hit me that this was a casual thing for you.”
“And it’s not for you?”
Vlad had expected a hint of accusation in the question, but it wasn’t there. “I don’t know, to be honest. I thought I had it straight in my head. You’re leaving soon. Maybe it’s more difficult to keep it on the surface because of everything in our past.”
Geo shrugged and sipped his hot chocolate. “Honestly, I’m not even trying. The truth is you’re not a random hookup, you couldn’t be. We have history. So I’m just going with the flow and never thought to act cold or distant just to make sure I drive a message home.”
Vlad tilted his head, locking eyes with Geo. “Yeah, I think it’s pretty clear to both of us. You’re leaving soon. At the end of the day, we live in different countries. And we don’t really know each other anymore.”
Geo smiled and nodded. His eyes seemed sad. “So get to know me again. I want to know you. We could at least do that.”
Vlad wondered if it really was what he wanted. Did he want to know what had kept Geo busy and away from him all these years? The relationships he had been in? Would it affect how Vlad saw him, remembered him?
Deep down, he wanted every intimate detail. The only reason he told himself he wasn’t interested in that information was his own fear. He was afraid of what he’d discover. Boyfriends, friends, interests, career… things that separated them. Things that Vlad had desired and other people had enjoyed.
